Keeping Ahead Programme

We offer a five session programme designed to help you think in different ways and strengthen your capacity to deal with uncertainty and change.

Over two to three months you will:

  • enhance your knowledge and skills to enable more effective working with members, senior managers, partners and communities
  • gain insight into your management style and learn how to influence and manage others in different ways
  • gain the necessary skills and practise effective networking with managers across the Council.

SEE is a Regional Employers' Organisation. We offer advice to local authorities across the south east, in addition to a range of training, development and consultancy opportunities tailored to your needs.


Session 1

Meet and greet tutors and participants. Share expectations, learning objectives and the  programme outline. In this session we will cover the context of working in modern local government and key issues facing it, networking strategies, setting Well Formed Outcomes and introduction to the case study/ group work (that will thread through the programme).

Participants will be asked to complete an Influencing Styles Questionnaire between sessions 1 and 2.

Session 2

This session will cover power, politics and persuasion (including influencing strategies), working with elected members and senior managers and creative thinking.

Session 3

The focus for this session will be working with partners and communities to deliver service outcomes (including stakeholder analysis and engagement), partnership journeys and life-cycles and scrutiny and accountability. Presentation skills will also be covered on this session as it links with effective engagement with others.

Session 4

This session will cover principles of effective communication, impression management, ‘role model’ input from one or two successful senior managers, drawing together the learning from the case study work and action planning (including strategies for maintaining momentum).

Session 5 (half-day)

Follow up review to reflect on learning and evaluate individual progress and impact on the organisation. To also consider how to manage future development. Certificates will be issued at this final session.
